Zorlu Performing Arts Center Case Study
Istanbul’s Zorlu Performing Arts Center delivers large-scale performances for international artists with Exterity IP Video
Zorlu Performing Arts Center is one of Istanbul’s most prestigious and influential cultural destinations and the third largest performing arts venue in the world. With capacity for over 2,000 people, Zorlu has established itself as a magnet for a diverse range of artistic talent and showcases several genres, from Broadway and West End musicals to jazz and opera. Recent and upcoming performances include Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera, New York City Ballet and the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma.
When it first opened in 2013, the Zorlu Performing Arts Center’s 50,000-square meter space made it one of the flagship venues in Turkey. Built for purpose and designed with the latest equipment, the main theatre has two balconies and a 2,242-seat capacity, complete with state-of-the-art sound, video and light show technology. Backstage, the Center’s studio allows for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering as well as rehearsals and events.
In order to offer arts lovers a powerful live experience, Zorlu recognised it needed a proAV system that would allow its employees to better manage the distribution of video throughout the venue. Another key requirement for the IP-based TV system was to enable the distribution of both live or pre-recorded performance images from the venues to the artists’ and managers’ rooms across the Center, as well as for streaming TV to other locations.
With such a high-profile project, the main Center selected Atempo, a highly-regarded regional system designer, as the lead contractor responsible for the AV component of the site. Atempo, a consultancy and installer with over 30 years’ experience in the field, has delivered over 200 successful projects, including Istanbul Basaksehir Stadium and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
Mr. Volkan Konuralp, Board President for Atempo, was overseeing the project. He explains: “We worked closely with the architects on this project and came up with a specification for the sound stage and video elements and we looked at several technology solutions.”
Konuralp’s key consideration was for a system with proven reliability and the flexibility to adapt to the future needs of the Center. “We tested a number of options before selecting Exterity’s IP video solution, which we felt offered the reliability, ease of management and a proven capability to integrate with all related AV systems to create such an advanced end-to-end multimedia environment.”
The Exterity platform also offered a great deal of flexibility and Atempo created a design that used a variety of input and output cards to serve the widest range of sources and destinations.
“We tested a number of options before selecting Exterity’s IP video solution, which we felt offered the reliability, ease of management and a proven capability to integrate with all related AV systems to create such an advanced end-to-end multimedia environment.”
The Exterity equipment also integrates seamlessly with the SDI-based broadcast equipment in the Center’s own studio to allow on-air shows to be re-broadcast around the site. The Exterity system provides the core IP video technology for the site-wide IP video infrastructure and complements the professional sound, public address and intercom systems that includes simultaneous interpretation, stage lighting, automation and video systems. The IP video system serves content to over 130 devices across the venue including HD flat panel displays, videowalls, and PCs. The Exterity equipment also integrates seamlessly with the SDI-based broadcast equipment in the Center’s own studio to allow on-air shows to be re-broadcast around the site.
“During events, stage managers at Zorlu can easily switch between channels to view live scenography camera feeds from backstage and office areas, ensuring shows are delivered without a hitch,” explains Mr Konuralp. “And if the Center requires further expansion in terms of more endpoints or channels, the Exterity system is more than capable of meeting these needs through a simple upgrade path.”
The installation at Zorlu enables the streaming of TV and HDMI content to the backstage of the main theatre and drama stage as well as the management offices, allowing managers at the Center to control both live and scheduled content across the site. This content can include recording of live TV for later playback, as well as providing Video-on-Demand. Additional benefits include the distribution of CCTV footage to the main monitoring room within the Center.
“In all the years the system has been in place, helping to deliver hundreds of events, we have only received two calls for support, which were resolved withjust a simple configuration change. The reliability and ease with which the Center’s staff have been able to run the system is just one example of why we are now using Exterity across most of our customer projects.”
